The Whole of Our Being

All roads are not the same

Back in the 90’s there was a motivational speaker who’s sales pitch started with his sad story of being broke, over weight and out of hope. The other day I read an article about a personal trainer, who is making himself fat.  He wants to know what it is to be overweight and better understand what fat people go through while dieting.  There was a bodybuilder on an infomercial selling an Ab Buster, who was involved in an auto accident, got fat, and depressed before he dropped his weight and created his miracle machine.   Then there are the maternity gurus, woman who gained weight during pregnancy and now coach everyone on how to drop weight.   I am not invalidating any of these people or their accomplishments.  If a person is able to make the transition from being fat, overweight and out of shape to fit and healthy that is wonderful and deserving of bragging rights.

My issue is with fat coaches and diet promoters who believe all fat peoples bodies respond the same way.  It is not true, everyone is different and people who have been in the battle of the bulge for more than 7 years will drop weight considerably different than people who have been fat for 12 months or less. Why? Metabolism; the long term fat persons metabolism is slower than of others.

Four life bodies:

·         Energetic body:  Projects our aura and allows us to sense objects without touching.

·         Physical Body: The shell that is us and what we see in the mirror

·         Memory body:  The foot prints in the sand that is our life.

·         Emotional Body: Our feeling self; mood.

There is more to dropping weight than burning more calories than we eat.  Everyone is unique and we have to address the whole of our self if we are going to make lasting change.

The memory body and the physical body play a great roll in the effectiveness of a weight reduction program.  If we have been fat for a short term our memory body remembers what it was like to be thin and will kick start the metabolism to return to that state of being where as if it has been a long time since the body was thin the memory may not remember what it is to be thin and the process then becomes more of a conditioning process.  It is the same as two people returning home, where one has been away for a week and the other for 10 yrs. They both know how to return but remembering how requires more effort from the one who has been away for the longer time.

The Metabolism is what makes us burn fat and drop weight; the speed in which it burns energy directly affects the results of our efforts.

Taking control of the metabolism:

·         Feed it: eat small and eat often; every 3 to 4 hrs. Food is fuel if the body has fuel it will burn fat. Eat the right fuel such as whole grains, fruits, beans, herbs, and spices. Healthy fats such as olive oil, soybean, nuts and seeds. White meat, fish, lean proteins help build muscles and drink water.

·         Train it: change up the pace while exercising rather than doing a long 30 minute stretch do 7 minutes, speed up for 90 seconds then return for 15 minutes and repeat the process or do split trainings 30 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes in the evening. Changing the heart rate has great long term effects on speeding the metabolism.

·         Condition it: Finally once the weight is off keep it off for at least seven years; studies have suggested that after conditioning the metabolism for seven years it works on auto pilot.

I am not a fan of any type of deprivation based weight control program.  I believe we are all unique and special with our own stories and motivations.  Making the choice to take control of the way we live by being responsible in our behavior and accountable for the results of our efforts is empowering and one of the greatest benefits of a successful weight control system.

Go have some fun,
